As I matured, I have gradually learnt it can be helpful to step back and observe the thoughts and feelings I am having; rather than getting caught up in them and forgetting there is anything else around me. I try hard to be conscious…and then detach from them; defuse a bit.
I learnt the idea is to sit back and notice my own thoughts, they might just be words running through my head. At times they can be nasty and overwhelming I concede. This idea is not designed to get rid of any particular thoughts and feelings, it is not supposed to make me feel any better. It is simply about acknowledging and letting these thoughts go, rather than holding on to them and getting stuck.
Until then, I can only say, ‘all right’, I have experienced certain thought or emotion. I recognize that emotion or feeling. Now I need to detach from that emotion.
